Asparagus and Cheese Pastries - Easy Finger Food for Babies

5   No Comments Published Mar 07, 2023   Updated Jun 02, 2023

I love a simple and easy finger food for baby Led Weaning! These little Asparagus and Cheese Pastries are very easy to make and easy for babies to hold. The delicate pastry texture makes them great for babies from 12 months.

Pastry makes a wonderful little pocket to create easy finger foods for babies. You can put just about any type of healthy filling you’d like. For these healthy little pockets, I added a cheese mixture and fresh asparagus. I love asparagus because it is loaded with essential vitamins and nutrients like vitamin K which helps with the development of healthy bones.

Ingredients used to make this delicious baby finger food.

  • Fresh Asparagus: It is important to slice your asparagus lengthwise 3 times and remove the thicker base when serving it to babies that are weaning.
  • Onion & Chive Cottage Cheese: Many markets carry pre-seasoned cottage cheese, however, you can make it yourself by simply adding a little bit of onion powder and fresh (or dried) chives to your plain cottage cheese.
  • Cheddar Cheese: The cheddar melts into the cottage cheese and adds flavour to this easy finger food
  • Premade Puff Pastry Sheet: When you’re a busy mum, sometimes pre-made is just easier.

How to make these easy Asparagus and Cheese Pastries

I will start this off by saying less is more when you are filling finger food sized pastries. I’m not sure why, but I always forget this on my first batch and have somewhat overflowing pastries. Once you whip up your cheese mixture, use a measuring spoon to help measure out the filling for each pastry. About 1 tablespoon of the cheese mixture should be enough (trust me!). Once you have added the cheese, top with 1-2 sliced asparagus spears. Finally, you’ll want to fold each pastry corner over the filling (as shown in the image below).

Method

  • Wash and cut the asparagus spears into 3 thin slices. Cut the bottoms as these can be chewy for smaller babies. Add to a bowl along with the lemon zest, olive oil and season with a little black pepper. Then stir well.
  • Finely dice the onion and add to a bowl along with the cottage cheese, cheddar cheese and stir well.
  • Divide the puff pastry sheet into 12 even squares. Then spoon a tablespoon of the cheese mixture into the centre. Add a couple of asparagus spears to each one.
  • Fold the corners in, then brush over a little egg wash. Place onto a baking tray lined with parchment, then bake for 15 minutes and golden brown.
  • Serve with a little extra black pepper.
