Baby Led Weaning Porridge Fingers with Berries

Porridge fingers are one of the best baby led weaning breakfast recipes you will ever try! For adults and children porridge is one of the best meals to start your day because oats are a complex carbohydrate which gives your body slow releasing energy until lunchtime.

Oats are a really nutritious ingredient and one of the most used in my recipes. I use them in everything from oats for breakfast, to cookies, in bread and even as a coating on nuggets. This comes with good reason because oats contain soluable fibre which is excellent for gut health. They also contain fibre (also good for your digestion and in turn your gut).

Oats also contain iron which your baby needs lots of when they start weaning, as well as magnesium, zinc and B vitamins.

You can probably now see why I try to make sure my kids eat oats every single day!

Mess free baby led weaning breakfast

Have you ever seen a baby at 6 months old feed them self porridge? You can probably just close your eyes and imagine the mess already! This is one of the main reasons parents opt for porridge fingers when it comes to weaning. Porridge fingers are almost like a soft, set bar of porridge that your baby can hold with basically zero mess.

This recipe can also be made ahead of time and frozen too.

What oats are best to use?

I use porridge oats from Dunnes Stores which are only €1 for an entire 1kg bag. You can use these to make your own baby porridge or homemade baby oats simply blend the oats in a nutribullet until fine. Then add milk and microwave for 1 minute. You can use this for a preloaded spoon for your baby.

Quick oats are also o.k for this recipe but steel cut oats just don’t work the same.

When can my baby have oats?

Porridge fingers and oats are perfect for your baby from 6 months. Cut them into small finger sizes just like in the photos.

I have two options here; a toddler portion and a skinnier baby portion. This will give you a good idea about portion sizes for your baby or toddler.

How do I give this to my baby?

Simply cut into oat fingers and place in front of your baby and let them get to work. I serve with a side of berries or some yogurt on a preloaded spoon.

This recipe is sponsored by Dunnes Stores. You can find their amazing oats in the cereal aisle! €1 – buy loads! I have tonnes more oat recipes you will love too.

Happy Weaning,
