Ginger and Spice Apple Crumble Jars
I’m writing this post with the intention of sending it to my older little ones (aged 16 and 11) for Mothers Day. I’m hoping they take the hint and serve me this for my breakfast. It really is such a simple recipe for cooking with kids and they just love the whole decorating thing.
You just can’t beat a good apple crumble and all of the parts to this recipe can be made ahead and used in totally different ways too. My advise is to make a large jar of the crumble topping and keep for topping off yogurt with a little fruit, for porridge and for sprinkling into smoothie bowls. The apple too can be made ahead and kept in a jar in the fridge or can be frozen too. The yogurt part I would make fresh because it is just so simple and easy to do…mash a banana, fold into yogurt..done!
Oscar loved this because it came in a jar. It’s the little things that make all the difference with toddlers. If it looks cute and unusual AND tastes good then its a winner for him. I just love the easy opportunity to cook with the kids.
I used no sugar and instead opted for fruit – dried for the crumble and a fresh banana for the yogurt topping. So this is a super healthy treat and only contains good ingredients that will nourish you and your kids. Honestly, this is more like a dessert than a breakfast so the little ones will love it!
We hope you all LOVE these Apple Crumble Jars. They are:

Servings
2 Adults + 2 Children

Ingredients
Apple Compote
3 sweet eating apples
Zest and Juice of 1 orange
1 tablespoon grated ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Crumble
30g pumpkin seeds
30g sunflower seeds
3 medjool dates
2 tablespoons olive oil
80g of oats
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
Yogurt Cream
200g greek yogurt (or natural)
1 large banana
Method
- Core the apples and chop into bite sized chunks. Add to a saucepan along with the juice of the orange (leave the zest aside for the crumble), grated ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Bring to the boil then reduce the heat to its lowest setting, cover pot with a lid and simmer for 5-6 minutes until the apple is soft. Take off the heat and allow to cool fully.
- Meanwhile, heat the oven to 180ºC. Pour the seeds onto a tray and heat up for about 10 minutes until they start to turn golden.
- Add the seeds to a food processor and process until they are broken up, then add the medjool dates and oil in and blend until it forms into a paste.
- Pour into a bowl, then add the oats and spices and using your hands work into a crumble mixture.
- Turn onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 10 -12 minutes until the mixture is golden in colour, remove from the oven and leave to cool.
- To assemble your jars, firstly add a few tablespoons of the apple mixture, then layer on the crumble before topping with yogurt.
- To decorate sprinkle a little more of the crumble on top.
