Traditional mince pie filling is made using dried fruit, butt loads of sugar and an alcohol but because this is Baby Led Feeding, I am always on the look out for healthy recipes your baby can enjoy too. Besides, the traditional mince pie recipes are loaded with sugar which is really not needed when using dried fruit which is already high in natural sugars.
Easy Pie Crust Recipe
These mince pie pops use a very simple pie crust recipe that you will make time and time again. I know what you are thinking, ‘pastry takes AGES to make’ BUT I have a top tip to make homemade pastry making so, so, so much easier!
All you need to make this easy pastry recipe is flour, butter and a little water. You more than likely have this in your cupboard already! Get out those ingredients and get making your pastry today! Even if you don’t intend on using it today.
Work the butter through your flour, add the water, then slightly knead and roll to the desired thickness. I usually roll mine to around 5mm for anything that is cut out like this mince pie recipe.
Now, fold your pastry in half, then half again and cover with clingfilm and pop into the freezer.
Ready to make easy mince pies?
Take the pastry out of the freezer the night before and defrost. Leave in the fridge until ready to use, then remove about 20 minutes before cutting and filling.
This is going to change your life and I promise you will never buy store bought frozen pastry ever again! Well why would you, when the pastry in your freezer really only contains 2 ingredients + a little water 🙂
Healthy Mince Pie Filling Recipe
For the inside filling, I use a mixture of melted coconut oil, dried raisins and fresh blueberries. Cook very gently until they soften almost like a jam. Add in the orange juice, lemon zest, spices and carrot and voila, you have the most amazingly delicious mince pie filling you have ever tasted. This healthy, no sugar added mince pie filling recipe literally will take you less than 15 minutes to make and can be stored in a sterilised jar for about 3 months! It couldn’t be easier.

Healthy Mince Pies Recipe for Baby led Weaning
Ingredients
- 1 tbs coconut oil
- 150 g 1 cup blueberries
- 140 g 1 cup raisins
- Juice 1/2 orange
- Zest lemon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 medium carrot grated
- 280 g 2 cups plain flour
- 120 g 1/2 cup butter at room temperature.
- 3-4 tbsp water
- Ice pop sticks
Method
- Add all of the ingredients for the mince pie filling to a pot and stir until the fruit has softened and the mixture is thick. This only takes about 10 minutes. Turn the heat off, and allow to cool. Store in a sterilised jar until ready to use.
- To make the pastry, add the flour and butter to a large bowl and using your fingers, work the butter through the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the water one tablespoon at a time until it comes together like a dough.
- Empty onto a well floured work surface, kneading very slightly, then roll until it is about 5mm thick.
- Use a cookie cutter to cut out 16 circles. Scoop 1 tsp of the mince pie mixture onto each one, then add a ice pop stick and top with another pastry circle. This one you can cut shapes out of the centre (I used little stars). Press the edges with a fork to seal.
- Brush the dough with a little egg wash, then bake in a preheated oven 180ºC/350ºF for 15-20 minutes until the dough is golden.
- Cool fully before serving.
