Cheese and Onion Scones
Whatever you do make this savoury snack for kids! Who knew a traditionally sweet breakfast scone would make such a yummy savoury finger food? Scones have such a wonderful texture and that texture makes them perfect for baby led weaning! The slightly crispy and firm outside make them easy for babies to grasp with their little hands, yet the crumbly and soft inside make them easy for babies of all ages to chew. When you are introducing foods to baby, it’s always a relief when you can hand them something to feed themselves that won’t make an epic mess.
Have Scones, Will Travel
These scones are great to pack for lunch boxes or day trips because they don’t have to be kept cold they stay yummy all day! Healthy savoury snacks that travel well are not always easy to find. Typically savoury snacks that are quick and do not spoil come in the form of a bag of crisps or salty crackers. These cheese and onion scones give you the opportunity to switch things up a bit.
Serving Suggestions
If you’re home, it’s amazing to top these scones with plain greek yoghurt or a little sour cream. Looking for more fun ideas? You can top these scones with almost anything from cheese and yoghurt to eggs or even hummus! For babies and toddlers who like to “dip” you can serve with a few of their favourite dip options on the side!

Have I mentioned that these savoury snacks are freezer friendly? Well, they are and they are a lifesaver for quick after school snacks(or during homeschooling). Just take them out of the freezer, wrap in a paper towel and pop them in the microwave for 15-25 seconds. Boom, after school snack!

Cheese and Onion Scones
Ingredients
- 200 g plain flour plus extra for dusting
- 50 g whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp bread soda
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 40 g 1/3 cup soft butter
- 5-6 sprigs fresh thyme leaves
- 1 medium white onion finely diced
- 2 spring onions
- 70 g grated cheddar cheese
- 150 ml Greek Yogurt
- 1 egg plus extra for brushing
- To serve: Sour Cream + Sprinkle finely sliced Spring Onion
Method
- Pre-heat oven to 200ºC ( 400ºF)
- Add the flour, bread soda, and garlic powder to a bowl and stir well, then using your fingers rub in the butter until it starts to resemble fine breadcrumbs, then stir in the thyme leaves, onion, and spring onions.
- In a jug whisk together the egg and yogurt, then make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the egg and yogurt. Mix well until it forms a dough. If it is too sticky just add a little extra flour until it comes together like a dough.
- Empty onto a floured worktop and knead gently, then cut out scones, or if you don’t have a cutter roll dough and cut with a knife.
- Placed onto a floured tray and brush over a little extra egg. Bake for 15 minutes until golden.
- Serve with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of spring onion.
