Healthy Shamrock Shakes - The Best of Ireland | Healthy Food for Kids

Healthy Shamrock Shake Recipe for kids | Healthy treats for kids. Main recipe image with text on image. This Shamrock shake is creamy, delicious and tastes like ice cream yet it contains only goodness and is super healthy for your little ones.

When you think ‘healthy recipe for kids’, Shamrocks Shakes are hopefully not the first thing that pops into your mind. These ‘Irish themed’ luminously green shakes are loved by kids everywhere. Unfortunately though, these festive shakes are super high in sugar (in fact it is the second AND the third ingredient after water!).

So, when I told my little ones that I was going to make a healthy, delicious treat for St.Patricks Day their first reaction was ‘PLEASE make Shamrock Shakes’.

After a lot of mixing here and there voila! I give you The Healthy Shamrock Shake – Baby Led Feeding style. It is probably my kids favourite thing ever! The frozen banana really gives it a texture of ice cream and adds that sweetness without having to add any sugar at all. Blended with a little milk it is the perfect combo (even if you were to just leave it here :)…. but you are not going to right? You’re going to add the spinach! And the yummy mint and I promise! You will not regret it!

Spinach adds that ‘oomph’ of colour to the shake that makes it just look a little similar to the normal Shamrock Shake. The most important ingredient though that twists this shake into the most amazing drink ever is Mint! I mulled it using a pestle and mortar to help release the minty oils before adding to the banana mixture. You don’t have to do this step but it really makes a huge difference.

Method

  • Add the frozen banana to a blender along with the milk and yogurt and blend until it becomes a thick ice cream consistency. You can add a little more milk if you prefer.
  • Use a postal and mortar to mull the mint leaves. This is important as it helps to really release their minty flavour.
  • Add the mint, spinach and vanilla to the blender and blend until it becomes super green!
  • Pour into a glass and grate over some dark chocolate, then top with mint leaves.
