Sunshine Butter - Nut Butter Alternative | Need a nut free snack? Are you making a recipe that calls for nut butter but need a replacement for peanut butter? Try this sunshine butter made with sunflower seeds. #babyledfeeding #nutfree #nonuts #healthylunchideas

This is a recipe is for all you Mommas who have babies who just can’t have peanut butter and are looking for healthy snack ideas for kids. I have been inundated with requests for alternatives for some of my recipe and I am so sorry it has taken me this long to pull this together for you.

Sunflower butter is so expensive to buy and usually comes in small, teeny, tiny jars for crazy prices. Making your own however is SUPER cheap. In fact, 2 jars (as shown in my photo) cost me less than €6 and we are still working our way through them 6 weeks later.

Sunflower seeds are a very low-allergen food but if your child has a severe nut allergy just check with your dietician first before giving them this sun butter.

Sunflower seeds are one of the most common seeds and are available in most stores. They are an excellent source of vitamin E (good for the skin and eyes), copper (helps to keep your immune system healthy), vitamin B as well as a multitude of other minerals and vitamins.

Making any nut or seed butter is a long task for your food processor especially if your machine is older or not powerful. It took just over 30 minutes for my food processor to turn these little seeds into jars of yummy goodness. A huge tip is; give your machine little breaks, 5 minutes is perfect every 10 minutes. Use the time to scrape the sides down before starting again. This will help keep your machine good for the long term.

I hope you and your gorgeous little babies enjoy this jar of sunshine! It is full of:

Nourishment
Goodness
and is 100%
Totally Delicious

If you are looking for healthy snack ideas for kids then whether you have a nut allergy or not sunflower butter makes a yummy nutritious snack. Serve with sliced banana for some extra goodness!

Method

  • Pre-heat oven to 180ºC
  • Pour the sunflower seeds onto a baking tray then place in the oven for about 8 minutes. Be careful as the seeds can burn really quickly. They should just be heated through but not browned.
  • Pour into a food processor and turn it onto high. It takes a good while for the oils to start releasing from the seeds so it is worth noting that you should give your food processor a little break every 10 minutes or so to allow it to cool down.
  • Scrape down the inside of the bowl while the machine is resting then start is again and repeat until you have a super smooth consistency to your sunflower butter.
  • Store in an airtight jar in the fridge and use within 1 month.
