Summer is upon us, and when you’re looking for kid friendly bbq food, it’s not always easy to find something that kids like and is easy for them to eat. While we grownups quite like the taste of charred meat (it wouldn’t be a bbq without it), kids aren’t the biggest fans and can find it quite off-putting. Kids want fun food, and we want recipe that are quick, easy and healthy. These Kid-Friendly Tacos with Coleslaw make for the perfect kids’ party food and are a great way to add spice to your little one’s diet.

Babies are never too young to learn about good taste, so why feed them bland foods? Babies use their taste buds and their mouths to discover and explore food, it is a crucial part of baby development and should be encouraged. Adding herbs and spices to your baby’s diet is a wonderful way to develop your baby’s taste buds. Little ones enjoy engaging all the senses and giving them exciting food is the best way to keep your baby interested in food. You don’t want to overdo it with spices when they are little, so don’t go for hot spicy food but food with plenty of flavours.

This is a Dunnes Stores recipe and the ingredients include crushed garlic which is full of vitamins and minerals and has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties helping to fight infection and to cleanse the system; coriander which is a flavorful antioxidant and digestive aid; and ground cinnamon which is a sweet spice with warming effects that aid digestion and circulation, as well as offering a high dose of antioxidants.

Served with Sweet &Tangy Fresh Slaw. Full of veggies with a homemade seasoning and a tangy sweet slaw made with apples, Greek yogurt and lemon.

Method

  • Heat the rapeseed oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and gently fry the peppers and onions until they start to soften.
  • Add the garlic, beef strips and mushrooms and fry until the meat starts to brown. Stir in the spices and give everything a good stir until the meat and vegetables are fully coated. Cook for a further minute then remove from the heat and pour into a serving bowl.
  • To make the coleslaw, grate the cabbage, apples and carrot into a bowl. Add the lemon juice, natural yogurt and apple cider vinegar, then season with a little black pepper and stir well.
  • Use a cookie cutter to cut out mini tacos from the tortillas. You can use the leftover pieces for breadcrumbs and freeze.
  • To serve, spoon a heaped mixture of the meat and vegetables onto a taco, add a tablespoon of coleslaw and top with a slice of avocado, a sprinkle of cheese and a dollop of sour cream. Make about 16 tacos and place on to a serving tray, then sprinkle over the coriander and serve.Note: Be sure to chop the beef into small bits for babies.
