"Yummy

I have been reading labels like a crazy Momma for the past year and it is really shocking the amount of sugar contained in the normal store bought jellies. Even the ones that advertise themselves as a healthier, natural option are still packed with corn syrup, sugar and glucose – 17g of sugar in one bag, that is more than a child’s recommended amount of sugar for an entire day! (3 teaspoons or 12g is recommended by the WHO) – So, all week I have been mixing and experimenting on creating the healthiest jelly I could possibly make.

These little treats are made using only fresh fruit, some vanilla, lemon and gelatine (my new obsession). I use grass fed gelatin which I buy on Amazon. Its a large tub and will last you ages.

I made quite a few flavours of these jellies over the past week. Combinations of beetroot and berries, carrot and orange and I will post a few more recipe soon. These two however, have been the best yet! I wanted them to be completely added sugar free, so not even a smidgen of maple syrup was allowed. The mango was definitely our favourite as they are naturally really sweet and delicious. Even after I made them though something was lacking and they just didn’t have that zingy taste of the jellies I love. So, back to researching labels and once I added some citric acid (lemon juice) they were amazing!

These little gummies are not as chewy as the regular kind so they are perfect for toddlers as a treat. Besides all the great benefits of gelatin they are also loaded in vitamin C which helps ward of colds and are also a great source of dietary fibre. Mangos are a rich source of vitamin A while blackberries are high in antioxidants.

If you are vegetarian and want an alternative you can use Agar which comes from seaweed. It is found in most health foods stores. I have added instructions for cooking with Agar below :)))

Happy gumming!
