What are you looking for?

I’m here to make your life as easy as possible. So, here are 6 recipes you can batch cook this week and fill up your freezer with 126 snacks! Divide that by 31 days and that works out at 4 months of snacks for kids. How would it feel to know you had all of that food in your freezer? I bet pretty good and the best part is that to prep all 6 of these recipes will take you 1 hour and 15 mins. Even if it took you double that time, perhaps you have a little one trying to help, or a baby on your hip (i’ve been there so I know what it’s like)…even at double time, 4 months of snacks will only take 2.5 hours. You could try to make 3 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. It’s all about making life easy!

Do kids need snacks?

The answer depends on the age of your child. Babies under the age of 12 months still rely on getting the majority of their nutrition from milk. In fact from 6-12 months, babies get 75% of all their nutrition from milk, which is a lot. In this case, food compliments the milk and it is more important to get established with a solid breakfast, lunch and dinner by the time they reach 12 months. Because of this babies under 12 months do not need snacks – it just takes away from the amount of milk they drink, and need.

Once your baby reaches 12 months, they will be eating those three meals a day and will have stopped bottle feeding and started drinking whole milk. Their nutritional needs are still really high and because their tummies are really small, it is important to introduce high quality snacks into their diet. Typically a child aged 1-4 will have 3 meals per day + 2 snacks – Breakfast, Snack, Lunch Snack, Dinner (small snack before bed).

A snack shouldn’t be the size of a meal, but should be filling and nutritious. High protein will keep your little one full for longer and the inclusion of iron rich foods will also help with brain development which is really important at this age. For example, you can serve any of the snacks below with a side of Greek yogurt, hummus, yogurt dip and a little piece of fruit. This will give your child a balanced, nourishing, healthy snack that will keep them full until their next meal.

For the last snack of the day, I like to serve protein which helps to keep your little one full before they go to sleep and won’t raise their blood sugar and give them energy before sleeping.

Veggie Nuggets for Baby Led Weaning Stacked

Cheese and Veggie Nuggets

These are one of my favourite savoury snacks for kids. The cheese gives them a delicious flavour that kids really love and they are a great way to get a few extra veggies in there. My advice is double up on the recipe. A portion of just one nugget is perfect for children 6 months to 12 months but over that two will suffice. Defrost at room temperature or overnight in a fridge. Reheat in the oven or even quicker in a microwave.

Baby Led Feeding Mini Veggie Baby Empanadas

On the Go Vegetarian Empanadas

To make this recipe quicker, buy a good quality pre-made shortcrust pastry. This saves 15 minutes of your time. Empanadas make an amazing finger food for babies, but they are also a brilliant snack idea for kids too. This recipe is vegetarian but you can also add some minced beef which will add addition iron for your little one. Make up the pastries, cool, then freeze with a little parchment paper inbetween each one. This prevents them from sticking. Defrost at room temperature or overnight in a fridge. Reheat in an oven or microwave.
