Sweet Pea Hummus

Sweet green peas, tahini, and chickpeas with spices all blended together to make this smooth healthy veggie hummus. This healthy recipe idea started as a fun way to make green food for St. Patricks Day while cooking with kids. When developing the recipe, I realized that all of the ingredients are freezer friendly and shelf-stable. Meaning that in times with limited shopping, this is a great way to make a healthy savoury snack for baby and the entire family!

Veggie hummus is an easy way to get sneaky veggies into your picky eaters. When making hummus, all ingredients are blended until smooth, making them unidentifiable to picky eaters. What’s more, it often makes the food into fun colors naturally, like green for peas or red for roasted red peppers. All the hummus recipe on the Baby Led Feeding website are pretty versatile. So if you don’t have one of the ingredients, you can often swap it with something else (like the main veggie for instance).

When swapping out veggies for hummus, be sure to remove excess moisture from veggies that retain a lot of water (like red peppers, cucumber, and frozen veggies that may have a bit of freezer ice on them). When it comes to tahini, you can just leave it out if you don’t have any. Chickpeas, while they are what makes a classic hummus, you can use white beans too if you don’t have any chickpeas on hand. I haven’t tried it, but in theory, black beans and just about any other bean should work too.

Just remember, when you make swaps it may change the flavour and texture a bit. The more swaps you make, the more things will change, so it’s usually best to make as few swaps as possible.

One of the best things about cooking is that you CAN try things a little differently if you need to or just want to. Flexibility can be especially helpful when cooking with kids. Sometimes, you come up with something AMAZING by accident! Babies often have no expectations about texture or flavour, so they are a true test to see what’s just plain yummy!
