Cranberry and Orange Trifle Jars - Christmas Dessert Idea
Shake things up on this year’s Christmas dessert table with this easy trifle recipe. It’s a brightly coloured and tangy flavoured dessert that older babies, kids and adults will love. If your baby has started preloaded spoon-feeding which is usually around 9 months old, they will be ready to experience this wonderfully light and healthy Christmas Dessert.

It has the texture and comforting layers of traditional trifle I remember as a child, but without the refined sugar and with a lot less cream replaced by the nutritional benefits of Greek Yogurt. It’s a wonderfully light desert to serve your adult guests too. They will come away feeling lighter and less over-indulged as can be the case over the festive season!

Cranberries are tiny red bullets of powerful antioxidants so a perfect addition to any Baking Christmas recipe. This super fruit is now perfectly in season but as is such a super food it’s just a good from a jar, a tin or a packet so no need to stress sourcing the ingredients.

Will this taste as good with diary free ingredients?
You can easily swap out the yogurt and cream for coconut yogurt which is delicious too! For the shortbread cookies, I have another great recipe for vegan cookies which are super easy to make – just click here for the recipe

Cookies and shortbread traditionally use butter for the lift needed in cakes, but they don’t rely on it for cookies especially this layered recipe. It’s jam packed with loveliness in a jar.

Sometimes I make the cookies the night before because they are tasty on their own with a cup of tea. Your toddler may enjoy pressing some coloured sprinkles on the dough and seeing their creative design come out of the oven. I usually continue on swiftly with the trifle dessert jars the very next day, before they are all devoured by my family.
These easy shortbread cookies for Christmas are a proud addition to wide range of natural festive treats.
This recipe contains enough ingredients for 5 jars for older children or adults but for babies and small children you can make up some smaller portions.
I hope you love this easy Christmas recipe! It’s;
- Creamy
- Easy
- Tangy
- Festive
- & SO delicious!

Ingredients
Shortbread Cookies
4 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon maple syrup
210g (1+1/2 cups) flour
1-2 tablespoons water
Fruit Mixture
100g (3/4 cup) dried cranberries
Juice 1 orange
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon allspice
2 oranges cut into bite-sized segments
Yogurt Cream
300ml (1.5 cups) Greek Yogurt
100ml whipped cream
Zest 1 orange
Juice 1/2 orange
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon maple syrup
To serve; dried orange segments, sprinkle cinnamon
Method
- Pre-heat the oven to 180ºC.
- Make the cookies by mixing the butter, maple syrup and flour together in a bowl. Add the water one tablespoon at a time until it comes together like a dough.
- Roll the dough into a long, fat sausage shape, then cover with clingfilm and refrigerate for an hour.
- Cut into circular cookies, then place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20 minutes until they start to turn slightly golden. Leave too cool fully before using.
- Place the cranberries, orange juice and spices into a small saucepan and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat down and simmer for about 10 minutes until the cranberries have soaked up all of the liquid and have turned deliciously juicy. Remove a few tablespoons of the cranberries and leave in a bowl for decorating the top then add the orange segments to the pot and stir well.
- To make the yogurt cream, add all of the ingredients to a bowl and using a spoon stir well.
- Break one cookie apart and add to the bottom of each serving glass or jar. Layer with the orange and cranberries, then add a layer of yogurt and repeat until you are left with a layer of yogurt cream on top. Top with the reserved cranberries, then decorate with an orange segment and a tiny sprinkle of cinnamon.
